Founder of Shuma Accounting, Co-owner of Zwane Financial Services and CA Training Officer at Absa Bank Group
Itani Mafune is a highly accomplished CA(SA) and ACMA, CGMA with a passion for both the financial industry and community development. As an Accounting Training Officer at Absa Bank Group, he has contributed significantly to the growth of future professionals, having successfully trained and mentored 60 trainees in the field. His impact extends beyond the office as he has played a pivotal role in fostering a positive and inclusive culture at his bank, earning recognition in 2023 as a young trailblazer within the organization by the CIB ProGeny Committee. He joined Absa in 2017 as part of the YCAP programme which included a 5 month secondment to NBC Bank in Tanzania. He is also a purpose ambassador for the bank and a former member of the Employment Equity Committee.
On the international stage, Itani’s dedication to global change is evident through his role as an Ambassador for One Young World in both Munich (2021) and Manchester (2022), where he actively contributed to discussions on critical issues. His main areas of focus were youth development and township revitalisation. His academic journey includes studies in the General Management Program (GMP) at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).
Not content with just a traditional career, Itani also founded Shuma Accounting, a firm specializing in business consulting. The company has performed work across the private and public sector including corporate finance work for SAFCOL and DBSA. Furthermore, he co-owns Zwane Financial Services, an enterprise with a focus on township communities, operating five branches and employing 22 people.
Itani’s commitment to giving back is evident through his voluntary involvement in the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (SAICA) SGB program and his current role as a member of the SAICA Training Regulations committee. One of his notable contributions to university students was the introduction of a targeted bursary scheme that disbursed R4 million over two years to support aspiring black accountants who couldn’t afford their fees.
Beyond his professional life, Itani is a keen golfer and actively engages in the realm of politics. With a diverse portfolio of achievements and a dedication to making a positive impact. He attributes his drive for success to the influential figures in his life, Patricia Mafune, Dr. Matamela Mafune, Zukile Nomvete, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Reinet Labuschagne.
