Asset Origination Transactor at Momentum Metropolitan Holdings Limited

Paul Wombo is a proud Thuthuka alumnus who finds joy in sharing how to overcome failure with students and colleagues. In 2015, he became second place runner-up in the SAICA SLS essay competition in an essay speaking against the restriction of the media.

He was involved in a trainee investment club and is currently engaged in an assertiveness club with colleagues. After finishing his CA training programme with the group, he joined the Asset Origination team. His dedication to his work, time spent researching markets and investee companies and his expertise in their businesses have earned him recognition from senior executives and CEOs of large JSE-listed companies, thus improving BSM’s relationships with key clients and allowing the BSM Asset Origination team to continue to meet its strategic objectives. His innovative thinking and willingness to cooperate and work with others have led him to be selected as one of BSM’s Advocates For Change, which is a programme within BSM targeted at finding solutions and recognising possibilities. He greatly values the importance of teamwork and agreed to be seconded to the BSM Middle Office function when the team had limited resources between year-end and half-year reporting. All this while he continued to be a member of the BSM Asset Origination team.

He worked long, hard hours dealing with profit and loss, market data, cash breaks, complex reporting and managing stakeholders. He further demonstrated excellence and accountability by closing two landmark infrastructure deals for Momentum Metropolitan with the Asset Origination team. He was instrumental in securing a R1,5-billion investment for BSM in the world’s largest solar PV renewable energy projects with battery energy storage systems and leading the financial model analysis and supporting the BSM credit team in project, sponsor and technology research. The projects won the Renewable Energy Deal of the Year at the Bonds, Loans, ESG Capital Markets conference in 2023. He was also part of the BSM Asset Origination team which originated and closed R2,2 billion of CPI-linked funding for three onshore wind renewable energy projects for which Momentum Metropolitan was co-mandated lead arranger for the first time. Momentum Metropolitan’s investments in renewable energy projects also contribute to Momentum Metropolitan’s objectives to invest in key infrastructure to help South Africa achieve inclusive economic growth and reduce carbon emissions.

Paul is a mentor and tutor, and regularly engages with students to encourage and empower them. He is also a chess lover.
